The Salmon River Lady Shamrocks opened their 2018-19 hockey season with two wins, and the Massena Raiders boys basketball team claimed their opening bout.
The ‘Rocks claimed 3-1 wins over both Clinton on Tuesday, Nov. 20 and Oswego on Wednesday, Nov. 21.
In the Clinton match, Rylee Garrow (one assist), Brycelan Sunday and Emma Ransom accounted for the three goals. Garrow set up Sunday, and the other two were unassisted. Carli Cartier stood tall in the net with 12 saves. Drew Kopek scored for Clinton. Luciana Robertelli made 20 saves.
The next day at Oswego, the teams were tied 1-all going into the second period when SRC punched in the game winner and an insurance goal.
Sunday, Olivia Moulton and Hannah Johnson each scored. Moulton was assisted by Mahkia Snyder and Talynn Wylie. Alexis Seymour assisted Johnson. Ieneratokwas Swamp and Madison Collette set up the play for Sunday. Cartier backstopped for another 19 saves. Monica Cahill scored Oswego’s goal. Ashley Finch turned aside 37 pucks.
Massena boys basketball started their season on a positive note after durging ahead 21-5 in the first quarter and going on to take a 65-37 win over Northeast Clinton Central on Friday, Nov. 23. Alex Rusaw netted 25 points and 15 rebounds. Tyler Bacon scored 10 points with eight assists. Chris McGregor and Josh Sheets scored seven points each. Tyler McDonald had six points after nailing two three-pointers. Ethan Barney scored four points, Zach LaBarge three, Ryan Herrick two and Zack Goolden one.
