AKWESASNE – Jacqueline Louise Mitchell, 57, of 141 Snye Road, Snye, passed away early Sunday morning, November 18, 2018 at Ottawa General Hospital.
Jackie was born March 30, 1961 in Malone, the daughter of the late Michael F. and Marie (Mitchell) Smith. She was a 1979 graduate of St. Agnes High School in Rochester. She continued her education at St. Lawrence College in Cornwall, where she graduated from the Registered Nursing Program.
She was a registered nurse working at the Akwesasne Home for the Aged, Hotel Dieu Hospital, and Tsiionkwanonhso:te where she was the Director of Nursing. For the past 20 years, she was the Literacy Coordinator at Iohahiio, where she loved to see her students learn, graduate, and become leaders within the community and their profession. She was active with the Ontario Native Literacy Coalition and a former member of the Ontario Nurses Association. She enjoyed watching soccer, taking and watching her great niece, Koral, play hockey. She also enjoyed watching all her nieces play at their various sporting events. Jackie also enjoyed singing, swimming in the pool, riding the pontoon, and was instrumental in the organization of the White-Deer Family Reunions.
Jackie is survived by her siblings, Vincenette (John) Cook of Akwesasne; Michele Mitchell of Ellicottville, NY; Geraldine (Kevin) Gettman of Rochester, NY; Michael Smith of Rochester; Robert Smith (Cindy Hinkle) of Portersville, PA; and Bernadette (Anthony) Parrinello of Walworth, NY; and her aunts and uncles, Esther and Joseph Jock of Akwesasne and Audrey and Ray Wagner of Henrietta, NY. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews, Teresa Mitchell, Eileen Cook, Steven Mitchell, Christopher Lotta, Bryan Smith, Brandon Smith, Olivia Cook, Grace Smith, Kevin Dettman, Ryan Hinkle, Kaitlyn Lidge, and Nathan Parrinello; her great nieces and nephews, Cloe Cook, Madison Mitchell, Jackson Smith, Autumn Gilbow, and Koral Mitchell, who she helped raise; her godchildren, Nikki Jocko, Olivia Cook, and Breana Locey; and a lifelong friend, Debbie Locey of Cornwall.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by an infant brother, Donald Philip Smith in 1962; a nephew, Joshua Mitchell on August 21, 2008; and her godparents, Mary and Louie LaFrance.
Friends may call at the home of her sister, Vincenette, 960 River Road, Akwesasne, starting at 2:00 PM Wednesday until 12:30 PM Friday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday 2:00 PM at St. Regis Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
