MCA's Community Health Program partnered with the Smart Akwesasne Team to host A World Diabetes Day event in Akwesasne. The event was held at the St. Regis Recreation on Wednesday, November 14th. Beginning at 3p.m., community members were invited test drive and learn more about electric cars. At 5 p.m., local organizations and businesses set up shop inside the recreation promoting a healthy lifestyle. Participants were encouraged to visit each booth, giving them a chance to win some of the fantastic prizes. Some of the prizes drawn were things such as wooden lacrosse sticks, fit bits and an Apple Watch to name a few.
Throughout the entire event community members were given the opportunity to give feedback on a Wellness app currently being developed in an effort to win a $5 million prize from the Smart Cities Challenge. The Smart Akwesasne team are working on ways to reduce the cases of diabetes through fitness, exercise and healthy eating habits. As we all know, diabetes is one of the major diseases that Akwesasne deals with on a daily basis. Every family has someone living with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes. The approach that Smart Akwesasne is taking is definitely unique by utilizing today's technologies to benefit our health instead of negatively impacting it.
Once everyone got a chance to visit all the booths they were invited to a free healthy meal catered by Big Russ'. There was an overwhelming turnout for the event, with people lined up at the informational booths and kitchen. Each booth had something to offer participants, whether it was a sample or a handful of heirloom seeds. Even if everyone didn't walk away with a prize, they were sure to take away something useful from the event. The Native North American Travelling College ended the evening with a social, lifting the spirits of everyone involved.
