The Massena Raiders are the Section 10 overall volleyball champions for 2018 after defeating Canton in four sets on Saturday, Nov. 3.
Canton took the first set 25-22, but Massena rallied to win the next three 25-16, 25-20 and 25-22.
Leading up to that on the same day, Massena beat Ogdensburg in five sets. OFA had a promising start, winning the first two 25-23 and 25-20. Massena came back to life and took three in a row, 25-19, 25-18 and 25-8.
Massena will advance to state playoffs on Saturday, Nov. 10 on their home court, the Martha Long Slack Athletic Facility at Massena High School. They will play to-be-determined opponents, including the winner of a Section 2-3 game. The winners on Nov. 10 will advance to the state final four in Glens Falls on Nov. 17.
In the overall final, Sophia Mitchell led the Massena offense with 13 service points and 18 assists. Ieronhenehtha Lazore (15 assists, four kills) and Delaney Durant served 11 points each. Delaney and her sister, Gabrielle Durant, had a combined 21 kills. Gabby also notched 10 service points. Maria Sbaffo served 10 points and had 11 kills.
