Massena girls soccer headed to state playoffs; Raider boys and Shamrock seasons come to an end

The Massena Raiders varsity girls soccer team made it to state playoffs. The Salmon River Shamrocks boys squad got as far as the Class B finals, but couldn’t make it past the Canton Bears.

The Massena girls defeated the Potsdam Sandstoners 3-1 on Wednesday, Oct. 24. They will advance to play in a game that was scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 30 in Fulton, after deadline for this edition. In the Canton game, Libby Rogers scored two goals, and the other was listed as an own goal from Ariana Noriega. Sabella Cromie was credited with nine saves. Victoria Hanna turned aside five shots for Potsdam.

The Salmon River boys won the Class B semifinals the same day in Ogdensburg, shutting out OFA 3-0. Clayton Jones booted in the eventual game winner 17 minutes into the bout. Cameron Cartier scored an insurance goal in the 13th minute of the second half, assisted by Mack Oakes-Lazare. Oakes-Lazore, with less than five minutes left in the game, took a pass from Cartier for the final marker. John Miller made five saves for Salmon. Nick Sholette made four for OFA.

On Saturday, Oct. 27, the Shamrocks’ season came to a close against Canton. Kaden Conners scored their only goal with 22:52 remaining in the first half. Ryan Aldous scored twice for Canton. Miller turned aside seven shots. Jack Finnerty, in the Canton net, made three saves.

The Shamrocks girls contingent lost 2-1 to OFA in their Class B playoff match on Tuesday, Oct. 23, bringing their season to an end. Shelby Ross scored twice for OFA. Myranda Collette set up a play where her sister, Madison Collette, booted in SRC’s lone goal. Lindsay Martin made nine saves in the ‘Rocks net.

Massena boys varsity soccer played their final 2018 game on Oct. 24, a 1-0 overtime loss to Franklin Academy in Potsdam. Hans Schumacher scored the only goal of the game 4:45 into the 15-minute OT period. Casey Hooper backstopped for Massena and made one save. Jake VanSteenburg recorded eight for Malone.
