A Voice from the Eastern Door
By Mahlon Smoke
Akwesasne Senior Center. On a rainy October 6th, 2018, inside the dining room, Akwesasne seniors and other crafters gathered to sell baked goods and their handmade wares. The craft sale was as much a place to run into old friends and visit as it was to buy a handmade craft or raffle ticket. There were chances for a Mohawk raffle, a quilt blanket raffle, and Caroline Bigtree raffling off a chance to get custom made moccasins. All members of the Akwesasne Senior's Club were encouraged to set up their crafts to sell to visitors. There was even a collective bake sale going on where members of the Senior Club or participants could bring in homemade goodies for sale. All profits made through the craft fair would go to the Meals on Wheels transportation vehicle which was purchased earlier this year. Any leftover money would be used for activities such as entertainment or repairs to the Seniors building itself.
