SRC girls soccer & volleyball, Massena swimmers all post first wins of season; Raiders volleyball continues unbeaten streak

Salmon River Shamrocks varsity girls soccer and volleyball both earned their first 2018 wins. Meanwhile, the Massena Red Raiders varsity volleyball team continued their unbeaten streak and the swim team posted their first two wins of the year.

On the volleyball court, the Shamrocks defeated Brushton-Moira for their first win of the year on Sept. 17. They won three straight sets by scores of 25-17, 27-25 and 25-23. Rylie Gray notched 11 service points with two aces. Mary Gray scored eight points with four aces and 20 sets. Kendall Jock served up six points with three kills and two aces. Kania Swamp also served six points, along with a solo kill. Kylee Smoke had 15 sets with three assists. Morgan Jock set 13 times with a pair of aces.

The Shamrocks girls soccer team posted their first win against Ogdensburg Free Academy in double overtime on Sept. 17. Yanenowi Logan scored the game-winner with less than a minute remaining in the second OT. Claire Rishe scored the opening goal for OFA 12 minutes into the second half. With 15 minutes left on the clock, Ieneratokwas Swamp sent the ball to Madison Collette, who booted in an SRC goal to cause OT. Logan Lazore backstopped for Salmon and made 12 saves. Sierra LaFlair turned aside 11 shots for Ogdensburg.

The volleyball contingent went on to repeat with victory against Potsdam two nights after their inaugural win. The scores were 25-19, 25-11 and 25-11. Rylie Gray served 13 points with seven kills. Kania Swamp scored 10 points with three kills and two aces. Kylee Smoke and Kendall Jock each scored five points. Mary Gray set the ball 40 times with six assists. Tyana Benedict had two points and two blocks.

The Massena and Salmon River volleyball teams went head-to-head on Sept. 21 in Massena with the Raiders taking a 3-0 win by scores of 25-18, 25-15 and 25-20. Massena setters Sophia Mitchell and Ieronhenehtha Lazore had what Coach Maggie Farrell described as "a great night" with nine and six service points, respectively. Also, Mitchell had nine assists and three kills, and Lazore had six assists and six kills. Maria Sbaffo had nine service points and four kills. Gabby Durant had eight service points, two blocks and four kills. Delany Durant had five service points, two blocks and three kills. Anna Thompson had five service points, two kills and four digs. On the defensive end, Ariana Kirkey and Rebecca Castleman had what Farrell called "a great match," with nine and five digs, respectively. For the Shamrocks, Kendall Jock notched eight service points, three kills and three aces. Mary Gray scored seven points, with 36 sets and seven assists. Kylee Smoke had 38 sets and seven assists. Tyana Benedict tallied four points, one kill and one block. Rylie Gray had four kills, three points and one block.

In other volleyball action, Massena beat Franklin Academy on Sept. 17 3-0 with 25-12, 25-5 and 25-21 final scores.

The Raiders swimmers downed Potsdam 107-62 on Sept. 18. They won all except two events. Keely Thompson-Cook took two first-place wins, the 200-meter individual medley in 3:14.04 and the 100-meter freestyle in 1:15.11. Some of her other teammates scoring wins were Carlie Donnelly in the 50 freestyle in 33.44, Rowan Mayette in the 100 butterfly in 1:23.81, Becca Lobdell in the 500 freestyle in 5:59.17 and Peyton Brown in the 100 breaststroke in 1:38.5. Callie Dow, Brown, Mayette and Lobdell won the 200 medley relay in 2:32.81. Dow, Thompson, Mayette and Kim Kaye won the 200 freestyle relay in 2:18.39 and the 400 freestyle relay in 5:14.67.

Three nights later, Massena snuck past Malone for a 48-46 home win. Thompson-Cook swam to first in the 200 freestyle in 2:24.81. She was among a contingent that also included Dow, Kaye and Mayette that swam to first in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:57.48. Thompson-Cook earned second in the 100 freestyle in 1:05.45. And she joined Kaye, Dow and Mayette to clinch second in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:32.86.

On the soccer field, the Massena varsity girls took a 2-1 win over St. Lawrence Central on Sept. 20. Nova LeGrow posted the first goal of the game in the fifth minute after taking a pass from Chloe Violi. LeGrow also scored the game-winner with about five minutes left in the game. Mackenzie Moreau struck for Potsdam halfway through the second half, with assists from Abigail Lemieux and Leah Francis. Massena's Sabella Cromie turned aside eight shots. Brooke Rubado made 15 saves in the SLC net. Three nights earlier, the Massena girls were shut out by Gouverneur. Jackie Storrin scored both goals, with assists on both from Ireland Martin. Cromie, in the Massena net, turned aside 15 shots. Abby Ruitta made 10 saves for the Wildcats.

The Shamrocks boys soccer team tied hosts Potsdam 2-2 on Sept. 21. Kaden Conners scored both goals for Salmon, the first assisted by Tim Cook in the 18th minute, and the second with an assist from goalkeeper John Miller 12 minutes later. Keenan Hassett and Romano Sergi scored for Potsdam in the second half. Both Miller and Potsdam netminder Danner Dorothy turned aside 10 shots. Three nights earlier, the Salmon boys lost to visiting Ogdensburg 3-2 in overtime. Cooper Hunter scored the opening goal for OFA early in the game. Mac Oakes-Lazore and Cameron Cartier, assisted by Tim Cook, accounted for the Shamrock goals. Jacob Sharpe tied the contest with less than one minute left in regulation. Miller (four saves) and Khyler Johnson (one save) split goaltender detail for Salmon River. Nick Sholette made 10 stops for OFA.

The Salmon River soccer girls took a 3-0 loss to Potsdam on Sept. 20. Logan Lazore backstopped for Salmon River, posting 10 saves. Daysia Wagner scored twice and Kennedy Emerson once. Taylor Benda made 10 saves for Potsdam.
