A Voice from the Eastern Door

Lots of cars on display for Twin Leaf's annual car show, but few from Akwesasne

By Andy Gardner

About 75 vehicles and many spectators came to Akwesasne on Saturday, Sept. 22 for Twin Leaf's fourth annual fall car show.

The vehicles on display ranged from luxury autos to sportscars. There were some trucks and a truck that the owner had turned into a welded patchwork.

The Ford truck from the 1950s had been painted with splatter paint on the wheelwells. It's Chevrolet tailgate had a Ford logo welded over it, and rusted spots on the body had been repaired with patchwork welding that looked like it came from other cars. The interior roof was covered in old New York state license plates that had been welded together to make a mesh.

Craig Lawrence, who manages the eastern Twin Leaf store on State Route 37, said he was happy with the turnout and the weather, but was hoping to get more Akwesasne people showing their cars. There were some, like John Herne with his 1983 Chevy Camaro SS, and John Lazore with his 2000 Dodge Viper. Most of those displaying came from surrounding communities like Massena and Potsdam.

"We had at least 75 cars this year ... it's been really nice," said Lawrence, who along with Lazore started the show four years ago. "I appreciate the community involvement and I'd like to see more cars from down here."
