The Raiders boys soccer earned a shutout win over Potsdam, the volleyball team won two over Brushton-Moira and Tupper Lake and the varsity swim season has gotten underway.
The boys soccer team went on to get shut out by Canton. On Sept. 11, they beat hosts Potsdam 1-0. Lleyton LaDue scored with less than three minutes remaining in the game for the only goal Massena needed. The point came on a play set up by Garrett Engstrom. Ansen Herrick made seven saves for Potsdam. Two nights later, Canton beat visiting Massena 3-0. Antonio Vecchio and Sam Martin scored in the first half. Andy Downs booted in the second insurance goal in the second half. Jack Finnerty stopped eight shots for Canton. Hooper turned aside seven scoring attempts for Massena. On Sept. 15, they hosted and lost to Franklin Academy 2-1. Hans Schumacher, who also had an assist, and Noah Lamica scored for Malone. Luke von Borstel scored for Massena.
The Raiders varsity swim team opened their season against Malone on Sept. 11. The Huskies swam to a 65-29 win. Callie Dow, Peyton Brown, Rowan Mayette and Ella Thompson won an early relay match in 2:13.48. Mayette notched the only other Massena win in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:12.41. The Huskies won first in the other 10 events.
The Raiders varsity volleyball contingent added wins over Tupper Lake and Brushton-Moira. On Sept. 13, they downed B-M 3-0, by scores of 25-1, 25-8 and 25-11. Sophia Mitchell served up 11 points and had seven assists. Teres Jacobs served up nine points and had six assists, Ieronhenehtha Lazore had eight points, three assists and four kills. Gabby Durant had six service points. Two nights earlier, they defeated Tupper Lake 3-1, by scores of 25-11, 25-11, 23-25 and 25-4.
The girls soccer team lost three games in a row. They fell to Potsdam 5-1 in a Sept. 10 home game. Nova LeGrow took a pass from Ava LaValley early in the game to post the first, and Massena's only, goal. Sabella Cromie made three saves. Luca Pecora and Sophia Janoyan each scored twice for Potsdam. Kennedy Emerson accounted for the other goal. Taylor Benda made 12 saves. Two days later, Massena lost 3-1 to Canton at home. Megan Eddy scored Massena's only goal in the second half with an assist from Chloe Violi. Cromie turned aside 10 shots. Carly Mattice, Jennifer Haycook and Hannah Reed all scored for Canton. Abigail Bent made 11 saves. On Sept. 14, Massena lost to Malone 2-1. Grace Bilow scored the first goal of the game for FA, assisted by Abby Lamica. Massena's Margaret Wilmshurst tied the game 16 minutes later. Caitlin Douglas scored what held up as the game-winner less than a minute later. Victoria Hanna stopped 16 shots for Malone. Cromie turned aside seven for Massena.
The Raiders varsity football squadron dropped a 30-6 game against St. Lawrence Central in Brasher Falls on Sept. 15.
Quarterback Zack Goolden rushed 47 yards on seven carries. He also passed 4-6 for 37 yards with one interception. Dominic Monacelli also filled in for quarterback duties, rushing 15 yards on three carries and passing 3-6 for 45 yards.
Chris Paige rushed 75 yards on eight carries. He also caught two passes for 20 yards. Ethan Miller rushed 11 yards on three attempts. David Hutchison carried the ball twice for five yards and caught five passes for 62 yards.
On the defensive side, Goolden and Monacelli each made five tackles. Miller and Hutchison each made four tackles. Ian McDermott and Zach Austin made three tackles apiece. Dylan Bullock tackled two ball carriers. Dylan Lazore, Michael Kuhn, Paige and Preston Gunyup each made solo tackles.
On special teams, Huhn punted twice for 47 yards and kicked off twice for 60 yards. Paige returned two kickoffs for 70 yards.
