The Akwesasne Animal Society hosted a backyard poultry workshop on Wednesday, August 15th at the Akwesasne Freedom School Garden Site. The workshop was led by Dr. Jarra Jagne, DVM, DACPV who specializes in poultry species and game birds. The workshop went over various topics pertaining to raising poultry. When asked why this workshop was held, Jennifer Herne, Director of the Akwesasne Animal Society stated, "People come to our clinic and ask if our vet will see their chickens. It's important to learn about caring for them, just as well as our cats and dogs. Our organization's mission is to provide outreach and education to the community."
This is the second time Dr. Jarra Jagne has been to Akwesasne teaching about poultry.
Community members who were able to attend one of two workshops throughout the day were able to learn about different types of vaccinations, breeds, biosecurity (protection from disease), diseases, and the knowledge anyone may need before purchasing any poultry. The workshop was aimed at community members who have recently purchased poultry or are thinking of purchasing poultry. It was a great workshop so that community members are fully prepared before diving into the poultry raising business. This workshop was made possible through the Akwesasne Community Trust. The next event to be held by the Akwesasne Animal Society will be the Spay and Neuter Clinic, October 1st through October 5th.
