A Voice from the Eastern Door
The Native North American Travelling College hosted their annual Akwesasne Friendship Day on Sunday, August 12th. The event is one of the Travelling College's biggest events, with many local artists and vendors set up to showcase their talents. The event began at 11:00 a.m. with live music and vendors. There was something for everyone to do like pie bingo, the Swiss cheese challenge and a bounce house. The Seven Dancers Coalition, Iakwashatste Youth Fitness and Akwesasne Child and Family Services put on various kids' activities and workshops throughout the day.
Artists from Akwesasne and other First Nations communities got up on stage to entertain throughout the entire day; from beginning to end, someone was singing or dancing. The artist line up for this year's Akwesasne Friendship Day was Jennifer Kreisberg, Kiawentiio & Rasentonkwa, Quese IMC, Kwaharani Jacobs, Crosswinds band and the NNATC Travel Troupe. There was also open mic for the brave individuals who choose to get up on stage and show off their talent. One of Akwesasne's most talented dancer's, Feryn King, graced the stage long enough for everyone to enjoy her creativity.
Everyone was welcome to come out and enjoy the rich culture that is the heart of Akwesasne. Boat rides were even provided for community members travelling from the south side of Akwesasne. There was no shortage of delicious food, the only problem anyone had was deciding what to eat. The Native North American Travelling College did a great job, once again, putting on their Annual Akwesasne Friendship Day. The event was funded by the Akwesasne Community Trust.
