A Voice from the Eastern Door
On Friday July 13th, Mohawk Council of Akwesasne held their Signing Ceremony for the 2018-2021 term at the A'nowara'ko: wa Arena. The ceremony began at 5 p.m. with the Ohenton Kariwatehkwen. Jordan Wapass, Executive Director then gave the welcoming remarks.
Immediately after, the Kawehno:ke District candidates took the Oath of Office, the newly elected District Chief's from Kawehno:ke Carolyn Francis and Edward Roundpoint took their oath to MCA and re-elected chiefs Dennis Chaussi and Vincent Thompson were sworn in.
The newly elected district chiefs for Kana:takon district are Theresa Jacobs and Julie Phillips-Jacobs with chiefs Daryl Lazore and Timothy Thompson returning to serve another three years.
District Chiefs taking their oath last, but not least was newly elected Toby Mitchell who will be serving alongside re-elected chiefs April Adams-Phillips, Connie Lazore, and Joseph Lazore.
The last to take the oath of office was Abram Benedict, who began serving his third term as Grand Chief on Monday, July 16, 2018.
Once the Oath of Office was completed, closing remarks were made by the District Chief's and the Grand Chief Abram Benedict. Everyone in attendance was invited to enjoy a meal with the newly elected Chiefs of the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne.
MCA Grand Chief Abram Benedict stated "I look forward to the next three years. Working with the newly elected Council, continuing to create new opportunities and relationships for the community."
The Signing Ceremony finished at 7 p.m. with the Ohenton Kariwatehkwen.
