Akwesasne Cultural Center Hosts Basket Making Class

The Akwesasne Cultural Center has recently wrapped up another successful basket making class taught by Denise Jock. The last class took place on June 25th, with a potluck and students showcasing their finished projects. There were students of all levels, some were able to finish 6 baskets during their time in class.

One student, Sally Martin, stated, "I moved back in 1994, and I have been coming to the museum to learn to make baskets at the classes held here."

The students were lucky to have such a great teacher, even experienced basket makers were able to learn new tricks alongside the students just beginning the craft. Some students were able to sell the baskets they made during the class, while others chose to keep theirs or give them to someone special. One thing is for sure; Akwesasne still has some of the most talented basket makers in Indian Country.

Sue Ellen Herne, Museum Program Coordinator, stated, "The basket making classes were possible through a grant by the New York State Council on the Arts, which provides the funding for the Akwesasne Cultural Center to be able to hold classes for the community." There are different art classes year round, with another one in the works. The next class will be advertised in the Indian Time Newspaper.
