ACSG Celebrate 10 Years with Annual 5K Walk and Run

The Akwesasne Cancer Support Group held their annual 5K Run and Walk, in celebration of their 10th Anniversary. The weather was beautiful, and the rain held off just long enough for participants to enjoy the scenic walk. The event took place at the Snye Recreation, with registration beginning at 8:30. Community members and participants enjoyed a grand breakfast from 8 am to 11am. The Seymour Sisters from Kawehnoke, generously volunteered their time and services, cooking and preparing the breakfast.

Akwesasne Cancer Support Group member Sheila Oakes stated, "This year we changed the route, we wanted it to be a more scenic route. So, we changed it to be going along River Road, from here to Spinners and back. We have approximately 30 participants registered this year. Each participant will be entered to win a weed eater and supplies, we made a mistake on the flyer and advertised a push lawnmower."

This year, the top three participants who collected the most pledges won one of three prizes; 1st place won a one night stay at the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino, free meal and $50 slot play. 2nd place won a dinner for two at 37 West and $25 gas card. 3rd place won a free oil change at Billy Cooks. All the proceeds raised by the 5K Walk and Run will benefit the Akwesasne Cancer Support Group who provide financial support to cancer patients and their families. This year is also the first time the money raised through the breakfast sales have gone directly to the Akwesasne Cancer Support Group.
