Despite Unseasonable Weather, Massena And Salmon Lax Teams Make Gains

Despite dismal, unseasonable wintry weather that wiped out a majority of games scheduled for the week of April 16, Salmon River girls lacrosse won two of three games, one of which was a loss to Massena. And the Shamrocks boys lacrosse team maintained a perfect record for the season.

The Lady Shamrocks and Lady Raiders are now tied in Section 10 with 3-1 records.

After trailing by two goals, the Salmon River girls lacrosse team came back with nine goals in a row and claimed a 12-5 win over Saranac Lake on April 16 at SUNY Potsdam. Trysten Burns scored four goals. Jill Benedict had three goals with an assist. Meg Martin and Jadie Burns scored a pair of goals each. Annabelle Mitchell netted a singleton. Joryan Adams, Payton Logan, Wynter Jock and Rylee Garrow fashioned single assists. Dava Thompson turned aside 10 shots in the net. For Saranac Lake, Lydia Bullock scored a team-high three goals. Erica Swirsky and Tiarra Anderson combined in nets for 20 saves.

Two nights later, Massena defeated visiting Salmon River 13-3. The Lady Raiders quickly assumed control of the game, posting a 1-0 lead just over one minute into regulation. Massena ratcheted up to 3-0 before the five-minute mark and stayed ahead 5-2 at the half. They retook the field for the second 25 minutes and reeled off eight goals in a row. Julia Blair scored a game-high five goals. Abigail Johnson scored a hat trick. Claire Tyo scored two goals. Meagan Morgan, Aryssa Hopps and Nova LeGrow all scored single goals. Hopps also fashioned an assist. Cayla Hinkley tallied two helpers and Lindsey LaDue had a solo assist. Gisele Todd covered the net for 10 saves. For the Lady Shamrocks, Gracie King, Trysten Burns and Meg Martin netted a goal apiece. Thompson stood tall with 19 saves.

On April 19, Salmon River met hosts Potsdam and walked away with a 13-7 victory. The Lady Shamrocks opened with back-to-back goals, gave up one, then came back to reel off five more before the halftime buzzer. Benedict paced Salmon with five goals. Trysten Burns and Jadie Burns each netted a trio of goals. King and Geena Terrance scored one goal each. Thompson made eight saves. For the Lady Sandstoners, Josie Bruso led the scoresheet with five goals. Julia Brasford made 12 saves and Olivia Scott denied four scoring attempts.

The Lady Raiders' April 17 at home against Ogdensburg was postponed to April 30.

During the week of April 16, only one of four boys lacrosse games for Massena and Salmon River actually made it to the field. Salmon River went against Saranac Lake at SUNY Potsdam on April 16 and clinched a 14-7 win. This leaves the team at a 5-0 2018 record. Salmon River fell behind 3-1 in the opening frame and came back to fire in five goals in the second stanza to lead 7-5 at the half. They outscored the competition 2-1 in the third period and 5-1 in the fourth quarter. Trevan David led the team in points with five assists. Keldren King and Tahnaokata Elijah scored three goals apiece. Rowisonkies Barnes (one assist), Nicholas Tromblay and Treyton Mitchell each scored two goals. Cobie Cree netted a singleton. Ryan Oakes Jr. covered the net for 16 saves. For Saranac Lake, DJ Morgan paced the squad with three goals. Ward Walton made 12 saves.

Massena at Ogdensburg on April 16 was postponed, as was Massena at Canton and Potsdam at Salmon River, both of which were to have taken place on April 19.

Unseasonable weather also wiped out Massena and Salmon's baseball and softball schedules for the week.

For softball, Salmon River at Ogdensburg on April 16 will now be played May 21. Salmon at St. Lawrence and Ogdensburg at Massena on April 17 have been postponed with no makeup date announced. Potsdam at Massena, originally scheduled for April 18, will be played May 18.

For baseball, Potsdam at Massena on April 18 has been postponed to May 18. Salmon River at Malone on April 18 has been moved to May 10. And the April 16 Massena at Ogdensburg game was postponed to May 3.
