A Voice from the Eastern Door
The Akwesasne Animal Society will be sponsoring a low cost spay/neuter and wellness clinic for cats and dogs at Kawehnó:ke Recreation Center from April 23 until April 27, 2018. The CATS program was established with the goal of reducing the overpopulation of cats in Akwesasne by offering assistance to low-income cat owners who need help accessing spay/neuter services. The upcoming April clinic will offer a day that will be devoted to feral cats, animals which either have never had contact with humans or where contact has diminished over time. When a domestic cat is abandoned or lost and left to fend for itself, it may become feral. Feral cats survive on their own outdoors but often have caretakers who provide food and a barn or other shelter for them. Trap/neuter/return (TNR) programs allow these cats to be humanely trapped and taken to a clinic to be vaccinated, spayed or neutered. They are then returned to their colony. Countless scientific studies have shown that this is best way to stop the breeding cycle of cats and decrease the size of colonies. It is also the most important thing that can be done to improve the quality of life for feral cats. If you are managing a colony of feral cats at your home or barn and are in need of assistance to get these cats to the spay/neuter clinic, please contact the Animal Society at 518-333-0448.
Thanks to the generous donation of Heart to Heart Fitness FitTribe initiative, additional funding will be available to help cats in our community. Roger does an amazing job as a caretaker of 13 feral cats, providing food, shelter, spay/neuter and veterinary services to the animals in his care. We appreciate the generous donation of Heart to Heart Fitness to help the cats in need in our community!
