A Voice from the Eastern Door

Cornwall Interfaith Partnership to Host Screening Tonight for Yom HaShoah

For this year’s Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) in Cornwall, the Cornwall Interfaith Partnership will be hosting the screening of a documentary A Survivor’s Story. The film examines the Holocaust through the experience of Irene Fogel Weiss, a young Jewish girl who by several twists of fate survived the horrors of the Auschwitz concentration camp. Irene shares her personal story, covering how Nazi influences took over her town, the harassment of her family and fellow Jews, their deportation to a Hungarian ghetto, her arrival at Auschwitz, and their death march into Germany ahead of the advancing Russian troops. She concludes by examining critical questions around humanity, civility, propaganda, and analyzing information in a search for truth.

Irene subsequently became a teacher in the United States and tells her story to a high-school audience with remarkable dignity and dispassion, which is all the more striking given the horrors she calmly describes and the questions she raises.

The screening, which will include refreshments and discussion, will take place at Knox – St. Paul’s United Church, 800 Twelfth Street East, from 7 to 9 pm on Thursday, April 11. All are welcome.
