A Silver Finish to the Season

Submitted by Stéphane Bissonnette

At the Brampton Canadettes 51st Easter Tournament, the world's largest and longest running female hockey tournament, the Akwesasne Wolves Bantam girls brought home the silver medal to bring an end to their 2017-2018 hockey season.

The Wolves opened the tournament by coming from behind to beat the top seeded Kapuskasing Jaguars 2-1. Down 0-1 after the first period, Akenhiio Lazore scored with assists from Emily Eldridge and Mackenzie Shane. Riana White opened the third period with the winning goal with assists from Hailey Lafrance and Maranda Richer.

In their second game, the Wolves skated to a 2-2 tie with the Smith Falls Cubs, the ODWHA league champions. Shane and Rayne Arenovich scored with assists from Richer and Eldridge. The Wolves ended round robin play with a 1-0 win against the Wawa Mustangs. Lazore had the lone goal with assists from Arenovich and Emily Bertournay-Kuhn.

To honor the girls' first place finish in round robin play, coach Steve Kuhn dyed his beard for the final game. Although a tough match was played, the Jaguars edged the Wolves 2-0 in the finals. Amy Betournay-Kuhn earned the shutout.

The Wolves would like to thank Welch LLP, Emard Lumber, Canadian Gypsum Corporation and CKON Radio for the sponsorships to allow them to participate in tournament play during the season.

The Akwesasne Wolves are planning to increase the number of girls' teams to include a midget team along with the bantam team for the 2018-2019 season. Girls interested in joining a team are asked to contact Stéphane Bissonnette, team manager, at sbissonnette@glpa-apgl.com.
