A Voice from the Eastern Door

Eating Healthy with Fun Food Art Challenge

At the Snye Homemakers a group of young children gathered to participate in a colorful and engaging challenge with an array of fruits and vegetables. Each child was tasked with creating an original piece of art with different and delicious foods. With laughter and children proud of their artwork, it marks a perfect end to Food Nutrition Month.

Throughout March, the MCA Community Health Center held several events at schools, the Snye Homemakers, and the Tsi Snaihne Recreation Center - all of which was to encourage children to eat healthily and diversify their eating habits. Each child was given an array of fruits and vegetables ranging from carrots to grapes to dragon fruit. They were then asked to create works of art following instructions or from their own imagination.

From owls to unicorns to flowers, it all added up to a creative and fun-filled afternoon. Catherine Ciampini was one of many organizers for the event, buying all the foods and displaying many informational pamphlets for the parents and children to read. She, along with Allyson Lamesse and Lorrie Caldwell hope to hold similar events to help children and the community at large understand their dietary needs and the healthy variety of foods available to them.
