A Voice from the Eastern Door

Getting Ready For The Children's Powwow

Weeks of practice is coming to a head, and this weekend the future Powwow dancers will be showing off their stuff in Hogansburg.

The annual Children's Powwow is set for Saturday, March 10, 2018 and for the past several weeks workshops and practices were held at the Kana:takon School and the Native North American Travelling College. These practices were to help new kids learn the tradition, or seasoned young dancers get in some floor time or to help others.

Last Friday such a practice was held at the Kana:takon School for the Girls Jingle. They shared gym floor time with the boys Smoke Dance whose practice a week before was cancelled due to the flooding in Hogansburg.

The annual event will be held Saturday at the former IGA Building where it has been held every year since its inception.

The night before the Children's Powwow, Friday March 9, a final rehearsal will be held to fine-tune the children's dancing skills and for them to learn the powwow etiquette to bring their best to the show.
