A Voice from the Eastern Door
The Massena Lady Raiders are Section 10 Class A champions and will advance in state playoffs to go against the Section 3 champions. Meanwhile, the Massena Raider boys basketball and Salmon River Shamrocks boys hockey seasons have come to a close.
The Lady Raider's next bout in NYSPHSAA playoffs will be March 7 at SUNY Potsdam at 6 p.m. Before that, on March 2, they will play in the Section 10 overall tournament against to-be-determined class champions. That game will also be at 6 p.m. at SUNY Potsdam.
Massena narrowly won their Class A banner in a 45-44 win over Franklin Academy at SUNY Potsdam on Feb. 19. Massena took an early lead when Lexis Jacobs nailed her first three-point shot of the game. They remained ahead until the final seconds of the first quarter, when Hailey Raville hit two free throws. Malone worked through the second period to a two-point lead, but Massena was able to close the gap to 24-20 by halftime. After Malone pulled ahead 27-26 in the third quarter, Massena was able to quell the Lady Huskies offense and ratchet up to a 34-27 lead going into the closing stanza. While down 44-43 with just seconds left to play, Malone fouled Bailey Trumble, sending her to the free throw line for two shot attempts. She sunk both, and FA was not able to pull back ahead in the brief window left on the clock. Jacobs finished with five points, as did Paige Perry, Bailey Trumble and Alyssa Eubank. Sydnee Carroll led the Lady Raiders offense with 17 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Nova LeGrow scored six points and Octavia Viskovich two. Raville led Malone with 18 points and 10 caroms.
The Shamrocks lost their chance to compete for the Section 10 Division II crown at the hands of Ogdensburg Free Academy on Feb. 22 at Tom Cavanaugh Arena in Fort Covington. The win was an upset, as Salmon River had been ranked number one in the New York State Sportswriters Association rankings the day before the game. The Blue Devils got out to a quick lead when Austin McRoberts took a pass from Alex Barrett 3:59 into regulation and scored. The game was a stalemate until 6:34 in the second period, when Isaac Testani scored with an assist from Broc Morley. Jared Barr connected for what would hold up as the game-winner in the first minutes of the third period, on a play set up by Testani and Jordan Fennessy. Jackson Troiano scored an insurance goal later on in the frame, converting on a pass from Stephen Morley. Barr scored the fifth goal with one minute left on an empty net.
Salmon River's goals came with 6:58 left in the third period after Cobie Cree fired in a shot with an assist from Talon Thompson. Dillon St. Ann-Spinner scored their second goal with 1:13 left in the game, assisted by Jacob Cook. Salmon River netminder John Jacobs made 18 saves.
The Massena Raider boys lost their chance at the Section 10 Class A title to Malone at SUNY Potsdam on Feb. 19. The final score was 58-53.
