TAUNY Hosts Annual Pea Soup and Johnnycake Lunch on February 10

TAUNY (Traditional Arts in Upstate New York) invites the community to enjoy a festive, hearty meal at the annual Pea Soup and Johnnycake Lunch on Saturday, February 10 from 11:00am-2:00pm at The TAUNY Center. This event has become a Canton Winterfest tradition.

Pea soup is often served in Quebecois sugar shacks during maple season. Green or split yellow peas are flavored with salt pork (though TAUNY will serve a vegetarian version as well), simmered until good and savory, and served piping hot. Pea soup came to the North Country with the many Quebecois families who settled in the region, and its pairing here with the cornmeal-based johnnycake reflects the meeting of Francophone and early American traditions.

TAUNY was introduced to this tradition in the 1980s by Madeleine and John Gray, Helena, NY. Throughout her life, Madeleine continued to prepare the traditional French-American recipes, such as meat pie, that her children and grandchildren relished. She shared her family recipe for soup, and other specialties, in a chapter of TAUNY’s regional cookbook, “Good Food, Served Right.”

The event is open to the public and fun for all ages. There is a $5 suggested donation for this program.

This program is made possible by underwriting support from Gray & Gray and Associates, Certified Public Accountants, P.C.

The TAUNY Center is located at 53 Main Street, Downtown Canton, NY. TAUNY is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping people understand and appreciate the folk traditions and local culture of everyday life--present and past--in the North Country. To do so, TAUNY seeks to research and preserve a record of diverse groups, customs and traditions; to recognize and empower traditional arts and artists; to identify and promote regional identity; and to provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn about folklore and culture. More information is available at tauny.org.
