A Voice from the Eastern Door
(Tsiothohrhko:wa/January 26, 2018) The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne and the Ahkwesahsne Mohawk Board of Education have jointly agreed to participate in a "Voices of Children and Youth" project. The goal of the project is to build capacity within the community of Akwesasne and to influence change toward safety and injury prevention.
Dr. Rose-Alma (Dolly) McDonald will be leading the project and has been collaborating with Dr. Ian Pike – University of British Columbia and Dr. Alison Macpherson – York University, since 2013 on a project that analyzed school injuries at AMBE. The issue to be studied includes the safe and unsafe places from the perspective of the youth of Akwesasne. The project is funded by the Canadian Institute and Health Research.
Three trainees, (one to be located at each AMBE school-Ahkwesahsne Mohawk School, Kana:takon School and Tsi Snaihne School), will be recruited to support the work and assist the project to identify and target selected injury issues by visual storytelling including photography, video, narratives and mapping to capture lived experience.
The team members and research team involved in the project include:
Donna Lahache, Director of Education, AMBE
Dr. Rose-Alma McDonald, Local Liaison and Project Lead
Dr. Ian Pike, Co-Principal Investigator
Dr. Alison Macpherson, Co-Principal Investigator
Dr. Emilie Beaulieu, Post Doctoral Fellow
The project will further demonstrate the potential to influence community safety and injury prevention policy and programming. Dr. McDonald will coordinate efforts within the community to monitor injuries occurring in the school setting and assess the need for local community injury prevention initiatives that will complement the MCA's Strategic Plan and Comprehensive Community Plan.
Dr. McDonald has been collaborating with AMBE for the past four years and will now be undertaking the Voices Project over the next two years. She is excited to get the project started and work with the students and community.
