TITLE: Mentor Program Coordinator

LOCATION: Akwesasne Boys & Girls Club Main Unit

SALARY: $14.50 per hour

DEPARTMENT: Programs

REPORTS TO: Program Manager

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

The philosophy of the Akwesasne Boys & Girls Club is to create a safe and positive environment while providing educational and cultural programs geared to meet the needs of youth, focusing on self-responsibility, maturity, and growth. The Akwesasne Boys & Girls Club is seeking energetic and creative individuals to work in a fast paced afterschool program.

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Responsible for the development, implementation and supervision of the Mentoring Programs for the Akwesasne Boys & Girls Club. The Mentoring Programs are core programs of the Club that enable youth to express themselves creatively while learning how to make good choices and allow youth the opportunity to achieve academic success. The Mentoring Program builds on the students’ strengths while also positively engaging them in the learning process through high yield learning games and academic support with the support of being paired with a volunteer mentor as their role model. The Mentoring Program also contains a series of special events that give the mentor/mentee an opportunity to learn new hobbies, skills and to help the members learn to express themselves with confidence.

KEY ROLES:

Create a safe and positive environment for Akwesasne Boys & Girls Club members ages 6-18 years old who will be participating in after-school activities between the hours of 2:30pm and 6:00pm.

• Promote, encourage and stimulate program participation.

• Provide guidance and role modeling to members.

• Participate in special programs and/or events such as field trips, celebrations and community events.

• Abide by Club’s policies, procedures, Tribal, Federal and State laws.

• Attend staff meetings, and other Club events as needed.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

• Two-year degree from an accredited college in education, child development or related discipline, with a minimum of two (2) years work experience in a Boys & Girls Club or similar organization, or a combination of both.

• Knowledge of software including but not limited to Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, Power Point and Access.

• Demonstrated organizational and project management skills.

• Knowledge of basic child and adolescent development and basic knowledge and skills in addressing difficult behaviors and addressing crisis situations.

• Group leadership skills, both verbal and written.

• Mandatory CPR and First Aid Certifications.

• Valid NYS Driver’s License.

• Ability to manage multiple tasks and to develop solutions to problems with limited supervision.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Club staff, community groups, and other related agencies.

• Knowledge and understanding of the Akwesasne community, values, traditions and social norms.

• Ability to teach and lead a classroom environment for various age groups and educational levels.

Applicants must meet the minimum requirements in terms of education and experience. Completion of three month probation period and a positive criminal reference check mandatory before position is made permanent.
