Flood Watch Advisory Remains in Effect for Akwesasne

AKWESASNE—The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Emergency Planning Office is notifying local residents that a flood watch remains in effect for the following low-lying areas along the St. Regis River: St. Regis Road, North Street, Cree Road, Mose Cook Road and Cook Road (near Fountain Woods).

A flood watch means that there is the potential for flooding. It does not mean that flooding will occur...it only means it is possible. It is also a recommendation for planning, preparation, and increased awareness.

In response to the flood watch, the Emergency Planning Office, Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police, Hogansburg-Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department, and the Tribe’s Water Resources Manager are working in a coordinated manner to provide the following update:

• There has been no increase in water levels during the past 12 hours and careful monitoring of the situation is continuing however, effected residents should think about what to do if flooding materializes;

• Effected residents are encouraged to be proactive and gather needed medication, valuable documents, changes of clothing and irreplaceable items. In the event of an evacuation, arrangements are in place for effected residents to have temporary accommodations for themselves and pets at the Comfort Inn; and

• Effected residents should be alert for changing weather conditions. Listen for further information and instructions on our local radio station 97.3fm CKON and the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Facebook page.

We appreciate your cooperation and encourage effected residents to be proactive and make preparations.

If you require assistance, please call the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police at (518) 358-9200.

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s Emergency Measures and Environment staff are closely monitoring water levels in the northern portion as well. Although the risk of flooding is highest near the former St. Regis River dam in Hogansburg, MCA staff will monitor and report any risk of flooding in the northern portion and MCA jurisdiction.

MCA staff are in contact with emergency personnel at the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe and will share any information with regard to potential flooding in any part of the Akwesasne community.

If you have an emergency, please contact the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service at 613-575-2000 (northern portion) or the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police at 518-358-9200.
