A Voice from the Eastern Door

After hockey & basketball wins, MCS sports canceled due to weather for second time this season

After earning wins on the ice rink and the basketball court, Massena had games for the second time this season canceled due to severe weather.

Games slated for Jan. 5 and 6 were canceled as a winter storm worked its way up the East Coast. The Massena Raiders varsity boys hockey Mark Tyo tournament was canceled, along with a girls hockey road game in Central New York.

Prior to that, the Lady Raiders hockey squadron picked up an 8-0 win over Alexandria Bay on Jan. 4. Mackenzie Garrow posted a 10-save performance in her first shutout. Hannah Chilton scored the only goal Massena needed 6:28 into regulation and would go on to score again in the third period. Julia Blair scored twice, along with Tori Gray, Katy Underwood, Brittany Streeter and Kylie Letham. Logan Deshaies had three assists. Abigail Johnson fashioned another two. Lindsey LaDue, Jessica Amo, Erin O’Connell, Underwood and Blair all had solo helpers.

Also on Jan. 3, the varsity girls basketball team downed Norwood-Norfolk 60-36. Lexis Jacobs and Sydnee Carroll led the Massena offense with 14 points each. Bailey Trumble scored eight points, Al’lainya Dumas six, Hannah Greco and Octavia Viskovich four apiece, Skyler Trumble and Nova LeGrow three each and Paige Perry and Erin McCarthey both scored two points.

The varsity boys basketball team lost 76-49 to visiting Ogdensburg on Jan. 2. Tyler Bacon paced the team with 19 points, five caroms, three assists and three steals. Alex Rusaw scored 12 points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked two shots. Chris McGregor scored nine points, Josh Sheets with four, Zack LaBarge three and Drew McMahon scored two points.

The Massena boys varsity hockey team enjoyed an 8-3 home win over OFA the same night. Chris Paige opened scoring 46 seconds into the game. OFA tied at the 3:38 mark when Zachery Thomas took a pass from Jordan Fennessy. Massena’s Matt Derouchie put the team up 2-1 with 5:30 left in the frame. Jared Barr tied the game 14 seconds into the second period on a play set up by Isaac Testani. The Raiders answered with two goals over the next 55 seconds, Nick Morrell assisted by Logan Chilton and Derouchie just over 30 seconds later and Paige assisted by Robert Southwick and Devon Jolley 21 seconds after that. Barr scored again for OFA at the 10:16 mark before Paige came through for Massena, unassisted at 10:23. Southwick, Derouchie and Nick Linstad went on to score three times. Nate Moffitt made 19 saves over the first two periods. Merrick Taraska stood in the net for the closing frame and denied four scoring attempts.
