In order for the Akwesasne Membership Board to determine if an application for Akwesasne Membership will be approved or denied, the Board must consider the following criteria:
a) Whether the applicant was born in the community
b) Commitment to Mohawk culture, traditions, lifestyle, and knowledge of language and customs
c) Individual or family ties to Members of the community
d) Member of a Clan
e) Degree of involvement in the affairs of the community
f) Reasons for wanting to be a member
This criteria is in Section 11 of the Akwesasne Membership Code. The following persons have applied for Membership under the Akwesasne Membership Code.
Jemison Benedict, age 8, and Tehya Benedict, age 14, children of Jasmine Benedict (Akwesasne) and Shawn Freeland (Liidlii Kue First Nation), Northwest Territories. Also, Jaxen Benedict, age 6 and Mila Benedict, age 4, children of Jasmine Benedict (Akwesasne) and Wayne Bearshield (Akwesasne/Rosebud Sioux Nation).
Cameron Taylor, age 32, was approved for Probationary Membership by the Akwesasne Membership Board on September 8, 2012. The Membership Board is now going to consider whether he has successfully completed his five year probationary period and whether to grant him full Akwesasne Membership.
Ida Crogan, age 46, is applying for Probationary Membership. She is the daughter of the late William Laughing (Akwesasne) and Jean Decontie (Maniwaki/Tuscarora). Ida Crogan is also applying for a Residency Permit under the Akwesasne Residency Law.
The following persons are applying for a Residency Permit under the Akwesasne Residency Law.
Wayne Baker, age 61, is registered with the Squamish First Nation in British Columbia.
Keith Gordon, age 54, is registered with the Mohawks of Kahnawake.
Cynthia Gordon, age 75, is registered with the Walpole Island First Nation.
Charlotte Green, age 73, is registered with the Mohawks of the Bay Quinte (Tyendinaga).
Community members have until Friday, January 19, 2018 to indicate whether they wish to make submissions regarding any of the above individuals by contacting the Office of Vital Statistics.
At the Akwesasne Membership Board meeting of November 18, 2017 the Akwesasne Membership Board approved full Akwesasne Membership to Regina Pierce, Reese Square and Conner Square. The Board granted Probationary Membership and a one year Residency Permit to David Diagostino. The Board granted a one year Residency Permit to Scottie Ryan Hill.
At the Akwesasne Membership Board meeting of December 9, 2017, the Akwesasne Membership Board approved full Akwesasne Membership to Michelle Thompson, Lynnyx Square and Davanna Square. The Board granted Probationary Membership and a one year Residency Permit to Joseph Coffey. The Board granted a one year Residency Permit to Nova Cook.
Community members wishing to appeal the Membership Board’s decision on any of the above have 30 days to appeal to the Council of Elders by contacting the Office of Vital Statistics. The Office of Vital Statistics is located at (613) 575-2250 ext. 1011, located at the Cornwall Island Administration Building #3.
