Massena Sports Wrap Up

The Massena Raiders varsity hockey, basketball and wrestling teams had a tough week with losses to St. Lawrence Central, Canton and Potsdam.

On Dec. 5, the varsity girl’s basketball squadron lost to visiting SLC by just one point in overtime. The contest included a solid offensive performance from Lexis Jacobs, who netted a team-high 14 points, and also chipped in five assists, seven rebounds and two steals. Massena ran the first half of the game, outscoring the Larries 15-13 in the first quarter and 15-2 in the second. SLC took over in the second half, and outscored Massena 22-14 in the third stanza and 13-5 in the closing frame before going on to outscore the Raiders 6-4 in overtime. Also for Massena, Nova LeGrow scored 13 points, along with an assist, five boards and a steal. Sydnee Carroll scored seven points and pulled down a team-high 10 caroms, along with a block, four assists and three steals. Alyssa Eubank netted eight points, grabbed six rebounds and stole the ball once. Bailey Trumble had three points, and Paige Perry and Octavia Viskovich two apiece. SLC’s Maggi Yandoh scored a game-high 19 points.

Two nights later, Massena fell to Franklin Academy 57-46. Massena trailed 14-3 after the opening quarter, than rallied to outscore Malone 35-33 over the next two stanzas. FA came back and dominated the closing frame 18-10 to gain their victory. Jacobs again led the Massena offense with 17 points. Perry scored 10. LeGrow and Eubank netted eight points each. Erin McCarthy scored two points and Carroll a free throw. Malone’s Haley Raville notched a game-high 24 points.

The girl’s hockey team was shut out by hosts Potsdam 7-0 on Dec. 6. Potsdam scored the only goal they would need plus their first insurance goal by halfway through the first period. Mackenzie Garrow stood tall in the Massena net, turning aside 23 shots.

The boy’s basketball team also dropped a contest to SLC, 55-35 on Dec. 5 in Brasher Falls. St. Lawrence was ahead 18-4 after the first quarter and went on to outscore Massena 16-4 in the third. Massena’s Collin Dickerson led their offense with nine points. Kaleb Miller, Spencer Beckstead, Tyler Bacon and Brendan O’Neill scored six points each. Connor LeBire netted two.

The Raiders wrestlers dropped their first match of the year, 54-27 to hosts Canton on Dec. 6. Massena won five of the first six matches for a 27-6 lead. Canton quickly jumped ahead 30-28, then earned multiple forfeit wins.

For Massena, Tyler Oxley pinned Cole Clawson in 1:39 in the 126 pound match. Mac LaPage pinned Gage Dean in 1:25 at 138 pounds. Wesley Rode claimed a 12-11 decision against Randy Clifford at 145 pounds. Gavin Perrine pinned Jeremy Addington-Measheaw in 1:58 in the 160 pound contest. Zachary Stowell pinned Jonathan O’Brian in 1:59 at 170.
