A Voice from the Eastern Door
Lora Lee LaFrance of the Office for the Aging gave a presentation on winter services. James Ransom gave an update on SRMT Elders Benefit Working Group, saying their work is completed and will be presented at a public meeting on January 10th of next year.
Tsiorasa Barreiro announced that the deadline for comments on the SRMT 2018 budget has expired, and there have been no comments from the community.
After being questioned about it by a community member, the SRMT announced that the General Manager of the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino and Resort has resigned. It was recommended by the community member that the next one be someone from Akwesasne. She also recommended a name.
Another community member expressed concern about recent activity on Swamp Road for a proposed housing development. “Nobody in that area wants it.” His father owns land in the area that the council’s staff are using for access, and he is upset that there has been no consultation with the people who live there. They are considering putting gates up and not letting anyone in. The community member expressed support for “expanding our community land base, as we have outgrown what we have. But move outward. Do not force housing developments in neighborhoods where they are not wanted.”
