A Voice from the Eastern Door
On Wednesday November 29th, the Diabetes Center for Excellence held their very own Holistic Health and Diabetes Care Event from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. The event's main focus was to combine holistic health and western medicine for full mind and body health. The event consisted vendor booths and informational tables. There was also a full day of demonstrations and guest speakers. Some of the different vendors and informational tables set up throughout the event were SRMT's Let's Get Healthy Program Diabetes Care Team, Dental and Pharmacy, Mental Health Services, SRMT Outreach, Shannon Hall - Tai Chi, Erika Witkop -Yoga, Mary Ann Post - Reiki, Akwesasne Cultural Restoration Program - Traditional Foods, and Chantal Forrest – Meditation; as well as: Heart to Heart Fitness Center, Ability O & P Orthotics & Prosthetics, Tara Tarbell - Niawen Skin Care, Phoenix Physical Therapy, Tewentahawih'tha Cole - Office for the Aging, Mara Russell, FNP & Elan Conger, RN and Pamela Youmell, RN Functional Medicine – Natural Health.
There was definitely no shortage of information and knowledge available to anyone interested in learning more, whether as a preventative measure or as tools to live with Diabetes in the healthiest way possible.
Community members in attendance were able to learn some new hands on techniques throughout the day, with all the free demonstrations and guest speakers. Some of the different demonstrations and guest speakers presenting throughout the event were Shannon Hall: Tai Chi, Tewentahawih'tha Cole: Stress Management Workshop, Akwesasne Cultural Restoration Program: Tea and Fire Cider, Tewentahawih'tha Cole: Brain Health as You Age, Heather Pontius, RD: Guided Meditation, Dr. Jonathon Beach, D.O: Beach Medical Services, Steevi King with Youth Class and Feryn King: Powwow Fitness & Hoop Dancing Demonstration and The Veils of the Nile: Belly Dancing Demonstration.
There was free lunch provided at the event, giving everyone a good healthy option for the day. Free recipes were given out for those who enjoyed the food enough to try and make it themselves. Everyone who attended the event was asked to sign a ballot for a chance to win 1 of 10 free gym passes to Heart to Heart Fitness Center.
