Akwesasne's Inaugural Parade of Lights

Akwesasne's 1st Parade of Lights and Tree Lighting took place this past Friday December 1st. The event began at the Generations Park, with many businesses, associations and individuals participating by decorating a vehicle or float with beautiful lights and decorations. The parade began at approximately 6:30pm, with decorated vehicles and floats leaving Generations Park and headed west on State Route 37 towards the main Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Building. There was no shortage of spectators lined up alongside the road to watch the Parade of Lights. The Saint Mohawk Tribal Police did an excellent job making sure everyone was safe by blocking off State Route 37 throughout the duration of the parade.

All the children and young at heart were full of excitement from the moment they could see all the bright lights coming down the road. There were many creative floats and costumes, giving the children a chance to see Santa Claus out and about along with other characters like Olaf, Queen Elsa and many elves and snowmen to name a few. Although there was no snow during the event, the weather was just right for the event.

Once the parade reached its final destination at the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Building, a tree lighting took place. Sub Chief Sweets Jacobs stated "A big Niawen:kowa goes out to the Akwesasne Coalition for Community Empowerment, Megan Bushey and Carrie Jacobs were very instrumental in putting this together for us. We'd also like to thank the maintenance workers who worked diligently in putting the lights up and decorating for this event. Family Support opened up their building to us, thank you to them. Tonight there was over 30 beautiful floats that joined us. This time of the year is when the young-at-heart imaginations soar into to overtime. The holidays are very exciting, a good time for family traditions and spending time with friends."

This was a free family event, with free hot chocolate, coffee and cookies giving out to all who attended. There was also holiday music and a warming station for those who got a little too chilly. The Parade of Lights was definitely a success, and the community looks forward to seeing what next year's parade brings.
