A Voice from the Eastern Door
On Wednesday, November 29, 2017, the former IGA building was buzzing with the excitement of toys, toys, and more toys! Free toys to exact, along with free books, bikes, dolls, games and more. The SRMT Soild Waste Management Program held their 6th Annual Akwesasne Recycling Day in the former IGA building. The Toy Swap is to highlight the "Reuse" part of "Reduce, Recycle and Reuse" motto.
Larry Thompson, SRMT Recycling Coordinator, Solid Waste Management Program stated, "We are focusing on the 'recycling and reuse' part. Many families in Akwesasne have the recycling part down. This year, our focus is on recycling and reusing your gently used toys and other children's items so other families can enjoy them at no cost. We've held other events throughout the year. Such as the Swap Shop (flea market) and Akwesasne Recycle Day. Each year more and more Akwesasronon join in. Its all part of reducing, recycling and reusing in Akwesasne."
The toys, books, bikes and other children's items were dropped off on Monday and Tuesday just prior to the Toy Swap on Wednesday. The donated items were cleaned, sorted and carefully organized into a shiny Toyland. Bikes were all in one spot, another for dolls, and yet another for books and other items.
Tribal Sub Chief, 'Sweets' Jacobs stated, "We received a great response from parents. The donated toys were already cleaned when they arrived and then we cleaned them again. Every toy and game was fully functioning and operational with all components attached."
Parents who made a donation had first choice of items from 5pm to 6pm and for the general public, the Toy Swap remained open from 6 to 8pm.
The Toy Swap is a great venue to let go of gently used toys, books, and other items and be made 'new' again for some lucky children. The Toy Swap will be held again next year, each year growing as more parents and guardians join in reducing, recycling and reusing.
