HOGANSBURG- Laura R. Cree, 86 of 203 St. Regis Road, passed away Thursday, November 16, 2017 at the Cornwall Community Hospital.
Laura was born on June 29, 1931 in St. Regis, Quebec, daughter of the Late Richard and Mary Cook Thompson. She attended St. Regis Mohawk School and Bombay High School, and on September 9, 1950, she married Robert Cree at the St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Michael Jacobs officiating. Robert predeceased her on August 10, 1991. She was also predeceased by a longtime companion, Ernest Millett.
Laura worked at the St. Regis Mohawk Health Services, Bombay Slipper Factory, Levi's in Cornwall, and was a lacer for the Lacrosse Factory on Kawehno:ke. Laura was a communicant of St. Regis Catholic Church and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #1479 and the St. Regis Mohawk Senior Citizens. She also served her community as a member of the St. Regis Mohawk Health Service Board and Akwesasne Housing Authority Board. She was an avid sports fan, she loved traveling, gardening, boating, music, dancing, and was a gifted quilter.
Laura is survived by her children, Sharon Cree of Hogansburg and her companion Charles Wilbur, Robert Jr. and Terry Cree, Ronald and Sheri Cree, and Ralph and Carla Cree, all of Hogansburg; a chosen daughter, Rosemarie Jacobs; two sisters, Grace Roundpoint of Kawehno:ke; and Katherine Thompson of Hogansburg; and two brothers, Joseph and Carol Ann Thompson of Kawehno:ke; and Robert Thompson of Hogansburg; three sisters-in-law, Christie Thompson of Kawehno:ke; Dolores Thompson of Hogansburg; and Glenda Cree of Virginia; nine grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her husband Rob, Laura was predeceased by two brothers, Stewart P. Thompson and Clarence Thompson, and a granddaughter Kristen Cree.
Friends called at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, on Monday. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday at the St. Regis Catholic Church, with Rev. Jerome Pastores celebrating. Burial will follow at Kateri Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made in Laura's memory to the Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department or the Andrew W. Cook Post #1479 American Legion Auxiliary.
