Massena Varsity Sports Wrap Up

The Massena varsity football team ended their regular season on a high note and the varsity volleyball team lost their first matchup of the season in the Section 10 title game, but they will continue in state playoffs.

On Monday, Oct. 30 at Mike Nichols Field, Massena beat Franco Cite from Ottawa, Ontario 58-18 to close their regular season.

Quarterback Montana Pierce rushed 203 yards on 20 tries and ran in three touchdowns, went 3-3 passing and threw one 88-yard touchdown pass. He made four tackles on defense. Gage Fiacco ran 104 yards on four carries, scored two touchdowns and made one 17-yard kickoff return. Chris Paige ran 30 yards on three carries and ran in a two point conversion. Trent Kirkey caught one 18-yard touchdown pass. Wesley Rode caught one 25-yard pass. Merrick Taraska kicked off nine times for 264 yards and booted one 25-yard field goal.

Mike Gardner led the defensive effort with 14 tackles. Tyler Bacon had seven tackles, Rode five, Kirkey and Dylan Bullock two each and Ben Chilton, Eddie Blair, Paige, Lochlan Bower, Jordan Armstrong, Hunter Bell, Jarrett Reed and Austin Stowell one tackle each.

After a perfect regular season, the varsity volleyball team on Friday, Nov. 3 beat Ogdensburg to earn a chance at the Section 10 title, and then lost that match to Chateaugay. They beat OFA 3-1 and then lost 3-0 to Chateaugay 22-25, 9-25, 12-25

“Chateaugay deserved to win, they out hustled us, out served us, and stayed on offense. When we got down we usually find a way to climb back up and go for the win. Tonight we didn’t show up physically or mentally in the championship game. As their coach I am proud of the season we have had and we had some good moments tonight, but we just couldn’t pull it off,” Coach Maggie Farrell wrote in an emailed statement following the season closer. “We have prepared all week for this game, and overall I am disappointed in the way we played. The girls on the sideline have the hard job of cheering the team on and possibly not seeing any play time; the easy and fun job was supposed to be for the girls playing the sport they love. That is not what happened. I commend Coach Reynolds and the Lady Bulldogs on a job well done. I am proud to say Massena had an undefeated season, but we just couldn’t finish tonight. Hopefully we can show up next week when we play in a playoff game next Wednesday down in Section 2.”
