A Voice from the Eastern Door

What started off as a discussion among three women turned into a full DIY Class for Women. This past Sunday, October 29th, the DIY #1 – Headboards session was held at the Grand Mohawk Inn's gym with fourteen women participating in this session. A Facebook post, over a month ago, generated more than 100 women stating interest in joining the DIY class. The first session was initially targeted to ten individuals, but due to the demand was increased to twenty.
The women participating were able to choose one of two styles, their frame size and frame design. Coordinating the DIY session was not an easy task, especially for someone who was as new to DIY as most of the participants. But with research, calculating, visits to the local hardware and craft stores, individuals had everything they needed to complete their projects, for the most part. Organizing and coordinating something for the first time normally has a few minor bumps, but you learn what you can do better for the next time. A local carpenter (Ross Mitchell) assisted with designing the frame templates and cutting the plywood to the participants' selection, as well as providing tools for the women to use. A short tutorial was reviewed with the participants prior to beginning the task of creating their own headboard. Once they began, individuals started to pair up with each other, offering assistance stapling, drilling or cutting. It was great to see such a cohesive effort amongst a great bunch of ladies.
Carrie Jacobs, on her Facebook page posted, "We stepped out of our comfort zone, worked really hard and helped each other out making these cool headboards! Everyone had a unique design and did a great job." Some were for themselves, some were a Christmas gift or for family members. Natalie Hemlock enjoyed many aspects of the session, and quoted, "Most importantly, I love bringing like-minded women together to work on a project in a positive and welcoming environment. It inspired us to break free from a limiting belief that we couldn't accomplish a big project like making a headboard from start-to-finish and to shine with our own accomplishment while helping each other to finish. We all elevated our friendships or made new friends. I only knew two people in that class and now I have more women I can call friends. That builds community."
With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we also had the 'wear pink' theme, along with an eighteen year breast cancer survivor participating. Thanks to all who participated in making this a successful session. Stay tuned for more women empowering women DIY workshops!!
