A Voice from the Eastern Door
(October 23, 2017) AKWESASNE – The Strong Roots Charitable Foundation caused a heat wave last week by raising the donation thermometer at the Akwesasne Homemakers by $40,000. The Akwesasne Homemakers is a volunteer group that exists to help the community during a time of need and to provide assistance. The group was started in the 1940's and has continually evolved and grown. With an increase in the usage of their beautiful facility it was identified that to ensure the safety and health of the community, especially the elders and disabled, the parking lot area would need to be repaired and paved. The Homemakers have held various grassroots fundraisers throughout the year totaling up to $20,000. With their fundraising efforts and the Strong Roots donation they are only $15,000 away from their goal! Homemakers Treasurer Stephanie Lazore-Cole stated "It is our hope that businesses and individuals will see how close we are to our goal and help by contributing what they can to get us to our goal. We would love to see the entire thermometer red in the next month. We are thankful to the Strong Roots Charitable Foundation for helping us and working on this project with us; we really appreciate it." For more information or to donate please contact Emmy Lazore-Mitchell at 613-575-1902.
The Akwesasne Homemakers submitted one of the winning proposals for 2017 funding from the Strong Roots Charitable Foundation. The purpose of the funding is to develop community-wide initiatives that impact the quality of life for Akwesasne Elders and Youth. This funding was made possible through the overwhelming generosity of the Strong Roots Charity Cup 2017 sponsors. Strong Roots actively seeks out sponsorships from off-reserve companies who have long benefited from doing business with Akwesasne. Please review the list of sponsors below and take notice of the companies, both local and off-reserve, who are coming through with a commitment to work with Strong Roots for the betterment of our community. We are pleased to be able to work with the Akwesasne Homemakers to promote a safe community for our elders.
