A Voice from the Eastern Door
The varsity volleyball team for another week maintained their perfect 2017 record, and the soccer, football and swim teams had mixed success in various games during the week of Oct. 9.
The volleyball team beat Potsdam 3-1 with scores of 25-22, 19-25, 25-12 and 26-24.
“It was a great night of volleyball,” Coach Maggie Farrell wrote in an email following the bout. “Potsdam has a strong team; the girls hustle and are very talented. I am very proud of my Massena team, they pushed themselves every point and we served very well tonight. Seniors Alyssa Eubank, Mckenzee Lazore, Jenna Tarbell, Cayla Hinkley, and Brittany Condon showed a lot of maturity and all had a great match.”
Lazore had 11 service points, eight kills and eight digs. Tarbell had 11 digs. Freshman Anna Thompson had seven service points and four kills. Condon had 12 service points and seven digs. Eubank had eight service points and four kills. Hinkley had 24 assists. Junior Gabby Durant had a strong night at the net; she had 5 kills and 6 blocks. Freshman Delaney Durant had 8 service points. Sophomore Netha Point had five kills and four digs.
Two nights earlier, they downed Ogdensburg on Oct. 11 and Potsdam on Oct. 13.
In the OFA game, they won 3-1 by scores of 25-17, 25-21, 15-25 and 25-19. Mckenzee Lazore had five kills and 12 service points. Anna Thompson had three kills, seven digs and nine service points. Gabby Durant had six blocks, four kills and 13 service points. Alyssa Eubank had four blocks, five kills and nine service points. Brittany Condon had 16 service points. Cayla Hinkley had 21 assists.
The varsity girl’s soccer team played three matches to a win, a loss and a draw. They tied 1-1 with Potsdam on Oct. 9. Potsdam scored in the first half when Gabrielle Sutliff broke through in the 17th minute. Nova LeGrow scored for Massena after 10 minutes of play in the second half, with an assist from Madison Weir. Lindsay Montroy made eight saves for Massena. Makenzie Martin turned aside 12 shots for Potsdam.
Two nights later, Massena lost 1-0 to Malone in double overtime.
On Oct. 13, Massena edged past hosts St. Lawrence Central 5-4. LeGrow scored the game-winner with 53 seconds left on the clock after taking a pass from Chloe Violi, who fashioned a goal and three assists of her own. Savanah Arney, Katy Underwood and Ariel Noriega also scored for Massena, and Julia Blair came through with an assist. Abby Lemieux scored twice for St. Lawrence, along with Marissa McLean with a goal and a helper. Kathleen Bellinger scored once and Janelle Brothers tallied an assist. Montroy denied nine scoring attempts for Massena. Leah Francis turned aside seven shots for St. Lawrence.
The varsity boy’s soccer team was unsuccessful in two games. They lost to Malone on Oct. 10, where Casey Hooper made nine saves and Jacob Larche three. They also lost to Potsdam 4-2 on Oct. 13.
The varsity swimmers split two meets, winning over Salmon River and losing to Canton. In the Salmon match on Oct. 10, eight members logged solo wins. Rowan Mayette claimed the 200-meter freestyle in 2:19.37. Riley Pratt paced the 200-meter individual medley in 2:54.28. Sydnee Carroll took the 50 freestyle in 28.59 seconds. Kimberly Kaye bested the 100 butterfly in 1:15.99. Danielle Eggleston won the 100 freestyle in 1:10.42. Callie Dow was victorious in the 500 freestyle in 6:48.33. Hannah Laneuville won the 100 backstroke in 1:15.77. Kristen Page topped the 100 breaststroke in 1:32.21. Dow and Kaye combined with Peyton Brown and Olivia Todd to win the 200 medley relay in 2:19.29. Laneuville, Page, Todd and Carroll joined forces to pace the 200 freestyle relay in 2:06.39. Mayette, Laneuville, Todd and Riley Pratt won the 400 freestyle relay in 4:48.09. For Salmon River, Katrina Oakes won second place in both the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly.
Two nights later, Massena lost to Canton 112-58. Mayette and Todd led Massena. Mayette claimed second in the 200 individual medley and third in the 100 butterfly. Todd won second in the 500 freestyle and third in the 200 freestyle. Sydnee Carroll finished second in the 50 freestyle, Peyton Brown swam to a second in the100 breaststroke and Kimberly Kaye was the second-place finisher in the 100 butterfly.
The varsity football team lost to hosts Malone on Oct. 14, 47-19. Quarterback Montana Pierce rushed 53 yards on 11 tries. He went 10-20 passing for 128 yards and one touchdown. Chris Paige rushed 44 yards on five carries and scored one touchdown, and caught 13 passes for 22 yards. Gage Fiacco rushed 55 yards on nine carries and caught three passes for 55 yards and scored one touchdown. Mike Gardner gained 52 yards on eight rushing attempts and caught one pass for 26 yards. Lochlan Bower caught one 10-yard pass. Zack Goolden gained one yard on three rushing attempts and nine yards on one reception.
On defense, Gardner had 17 tackles, Pierce 10, Paige eight, Jordan Armstrong seven, Wesley Rode, Tyler Bacon and Dylan Bullock six each, Trent Kirkey and Ben Chilton five each, Fiacco and Goolden four each, Matt Phillips, Hunter Bell and Brandon Badder three each, Merrick Taraska two and Austin Stowell, David Lashomb and Bower one each.
Pierce returned three punts for 82 yards. On kickoff returning, Paige returned one for 23 yards, Fiacco two for 83 yards, Goolden one for eight yards, Gardner two for 34 yards and Kirkey two for 27 yards.
