A Voice from the Eastern Door
The Akwesasne entry in the National Capital Women's Hockey league held their home opener Sunday at a foggy Anowarako:wa Arena. Some of the players had just come from a tournament in Massena and if they were tired after playing at least three games they did not show it.
The Arnprior Aces were in town and got on the scoreboard early but that was their only lead of the contest as the host Wild scored three straight from Tia Mitchell, Jenna Merpaw and Olivia Cook, to go on for the 7-2 win.
Cook scored her second of the game at the halfway point of the second period to make it 4-1. Cook also picked up two assists. Arnprior started to climb out of that hole as they found themselves 5 on 3 on two occasions. They scored once on one of those two man powerplays.
But Jenna Thompson, Krystal Peters and Merpaw, with her second of the game, put them ahead for good in third period scoring. Both of the Merpaw goals were end-to-end rushes.
Wild goaltender Erika McKay wasn't very busy during this game but came up big when called upon.
The compressors at the Anowarako:wa Arena ice plant were working at 50% and combined with the warm temperatures the rink was covered in fog. Repairs were scheduled for last Monday.
The Wild's next game is this weekend on the road and they return to the Island on October 29 as they host Clarence-Rockland. Game time is 3:00 pm.
