EVELYN A. JOCKO

AKWESASNE – Mrs. Evelyn A. Jocko, 92, of 149 McGee Road, peacefully passed to the Spirit World on Wednesday evening, October 11, 2017, at her home with her loving family at her side.

Evelyn was born March 27, 1925 on Kawehno:ke (Cornwall Island), the daughter of the late John Day and Julia Barnhart. Evelyn worked in several factories in Syracuse throughout her life. She was a gifted basketmaker and an avid gardener – canning her rewards of the garden. She loved swimming, picking sweetgrass, flowers, playing card games and BINGO. She loved being with her family, especially "her girls."

Evelyn is survived by her son-in-law, Harvey Thompson of Akwesasne; her grandchildren, Jerome (Deloris) Thompson, Harvey Thompson, Jr. (Teioswathe Cook), Ramona (Jerome) Shenandoah, Veronica Thompson, Randy Day, Victoria Day, Darcy Day, and Heath (Reannon) Day; 17 great grandchildren; 29 great-great grandchildren; and her brother, Pat Day of Kawehno:ke (Cornwall Island).

In addition to her parents and many siblings, Evelyn was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Jocko; her longtime companion, Huey Tarbell; her children, Raymond Day and Margaret "Margie" Thompson; a granddaughter, Adeline "Sister" Day; and two grandsons Rodney Jerome Thompson and Robert Day.

Friends called at her residence and her funeral ceremony was held on Saturday at the Mohawk Nation Longhouse. Burial will follow in Solomon Road Cemetery, Akwesasne.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society and Kidney Foundation.
