SRCS 7th Graders Visit Akwesasne Cultural Center Museum

Submitted by Kara Buehler

For the past six weeks students have embarked on a study of culture by using the Driving Question: "Who am I?" as our guide. To assist in our study of culture students read the novel "A Long Walk to Water," created their own cultures based on geography, and compared and contrasted cultures. As a way to further explore the rich culture in our community students traveled to the Akwesasne Cultural Center in Hogansburg. At the museum students were able to explore the many exhibits available, from kastowas to a replica of a traditional Mohawk village. Not only did the museum showcase the traditional Mohawk culture, but it also took students into the present with a traveling exhibit that focuses on current times. When students weren't looking through the museum, they were partaking in a question-driven presentation by the Native North American Travelling College.
