On October 15th, Mohawk Council of Akwesasne along with Akwesasne Child and Family Services held a fundraiser event at the Tsi Snaihne Recreation on behalf of the Dreams Take Flight Initiative. This is the second year that Akwesasne has been a part of the initiative, which allows 4 children from Akwesasne ages 6 to 11 year old to go on a one-day trip to Disney World.
The event began with a Disney Themed 5K run/walk, with registration starting at 9am and the run/walk beginning at 10am. Registration fee was $10 per person and $25 per family. A benefit meal of chili, hotdogs and a drink was served throughout the event. Children also had the opportunity to dine with a Disney character for $10 per child which included a hotdog, popcorn and photo with a Disney character.
A Mohawk Auction was also set up on Friday at the Kanonhkwatsheri:io Atrium. Everyone had an opportunity to buy tickets and have a chance at winning some great prizes. There were also tickets for a beaded earring tree and a 'find the joker' board, adding to the plenty of ways that community members could contribute to such an amazing initiative. The event ended at approximately 2 pm, with the winners being announced for the Mohawk Auction and the beaded earring tree.
To date, the Dreams Take flight Initiative has taken over 20,000 children to Disney World, and over 100 First Nations Children. The lucky four children will be surprised on October 21st to find they will be going to Disney World on November 1st. The children were chosen with the help of the ACFS program.
If you would like to learn more about this great initiative you can go to http://www.dreamstakeflight.ca. They are always fundraising to offset the costs of bringing the children to Disney World entirely free of charge, thanks to the volunteers and individuals involved.
