A Voice from the Eastern Door

Ahkwesahsne Mohawk School Awards for September

The school year is a little over a month old and the students were awarded for their hard work so far.

Last Friday the Kawehno:ke School held their monthly attendance awards and to get the school year started they started the Student Council proceedings.

The students who were running in the Primary and Middle school each gave speeches telling their classmates why they should elect them as class representative and Secretary.

The common theme among them was bullying and what they would do to stop this.

Others wanted to change the school menu, others wanted to repair the old lacrosse box at the north side of the school and raise money to do so. They also wanted to plan more after school sports activities, field trips, but all in all they wanted to make A.M.S. a better place.

Newly installed principal Denise Jackson gave out the awards and she started the program by bringing in guest speaker Dr. Torres who recently started at the Kawehno:ke Medical Clinic.

He said he hoped the students studied hard and someday will become teachers and doctors.

"I'd like to encourage you to study as much as you can. I'm sure there are some budding teachers out there and perhaps some of you would like to go to medical school to become a nurse or a doctor," said Torres.
