A Voice from the Eastern Door
In Honor of September being National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month - a time to share resources and stories in an effort to help friends, families and others who are in pain of losing a loved one to suicide, the Akwesasne Suicide Prevention Coalition hosted the 3rd Annual Suicide Prevention Awareness Walk at the Generations Park on September 29th, 2017. The event began at 5pm with the Akwesasne Women's singers performing for everyone in attendance. Dr. Darryl Tonemah also came to speak to everyone in attendance before the walk. The programs involved with the Akwesasne Suicide Prevention Coalition also had tables/booths set up with information on their programs. Community members who attended were able to write on a luminary and leave it on the walking trail during the walk. The luminaries had inspirational messages to loved ones that have passed and words of encouragement to anyone struggling.
It was great to see how many resources and programs are available to our community. The Akwesasne Suicide Coalition itself is a group of programs and individuals who are willing to help anyone who is struggling. If you or someone you know is struggling, there is someone that can help.
