A Voice from the Eastern Door
On Friday September 29th, 2017 the North Country Honor Flight arrived at the American Legion Post 1479 at approximately 3:00 pm from the American Legion Post #219 in Malone, NY. The five veterans chosen to attend the Honor Flight from Akwesasne were Peter Back - Korean War, Thomas Herne - Korean War, Charles Jacobs - Korean War, Benjamin Kelly - Korean War and Louis Jr. Jacobs - Korean War. Three veterans from Malone and St. Regis Falls also attended the Honor Flight.
Everyone gathered at the American Legion Post 1479 for a send-off ceremony to honor the veterans. The Commander, Mike Cook who graciously hosted the event at the American Legion Post, gave words of praise and encouragement. A quick prayer was given to ask for the veteran's safe travels and wellbeing before everyone gathered outside to prepare for the escort. A motorcycle escort began at the American Legion Post 1479, which escorted the veterans through Hogansburg, Fort Covington, Constable, Malone, Chateaugay, Ellenburg and on to Plattsburgh. Once the veterans arrived in Plattsburgh, they stayed overnight at the Econo-Lodge. On Saturday Morning, September 30th, 2017 they were picked up and taken to base oval. At the base oval the veterans attended a formal send-off ceremony at Plattsburgh Airport, prior to flying out to Washington DC.
When the veterans arrived in Washington DC, they visited several memorial sites such as the Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Viet Nam Memorial and many more.
