The Massena girls volleyball team continued their strong start to the 2017 season with wins over Salmon River and Malone, and also championing their “Volley for the Cure” fundraiser.
On Sept. 20, Massena defeated visiting Salmon River 3-0 by scores of 25-14, 25-22 and 25-8. Mckenzee Lazore had seven service points and three kills. Cayla Hinkley had 21 assists. Alyssa Eubank had 16 service points and three kills, which Coach Maggie Farrell in an email described as “outstanding.”
“Brittany Condon had an outstanding night as well with 14 service points,” the coach said.
Gabby Durant had nine kills and five service points, which was “great play,” according to Farrell. Freshman player Anna Thompson chipped in seven service points and three kills.
Two nights earlier at home, Massena downed Malone 3-0 with scores of 25-8, 25-19 and 25-13. Junior Rebecca Castleman had 16 defensive digs. Senior setter Hinkley came through with 22 assists. Lazore and Eubank, both seniors, each fashioned 10 service points and four kills. Gabby Durant, a junior, had 16 service points and three kills. Freshman Delaney Durant added 14 service points and two kills.
At the team’s “Volley for a Cure” on Sept. 23, Massena won a day of volleyball, including the championship game against Ogdensburg. Other participating teams included Canton, Chateaugay, Madrid-Waddington, Ogdensburg Free Academy, Potsdam and Salmon River.
The event raised money in memory of Kate O’Shaughnessy, a Massena Central graduate who died of cancer in 2000. A large chunk of money raised at the event went to O’Shaughnessy’s family, who in turn donate it to organizations that support cancer research, Coach Farrell said.
The varsity football team lost 22-7 against hosts Ogdensburg Free Academy on Sept. 22.
Quarterback Montana Pierce on a 90-yard drive threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Gage Fiacco in the fourth quarter, followed by a PAT from Merrick Taraska.
Pierce went 5-10 passing for 41 yards. He rushed 75 yards on 11 tries with a long of 17. Pierce also picked up five tackles on defense.
Massena was already behind by the time Fiacco entered the endzone, having been outscored 8-0 in the first quarter, 6-0 in the second and 8-0 in the third.
The girls soccer team won 2-0 over Ogdensburg and 3-0 over St. Lawrence.
Their OFA win was Sept. 21 at home. After a stalemate first half, Nova LeGrow scored what held up as the game-winner in the fifth minute and Savannah Arney booted an insurance goal three minutes later.
On Sept. 18, they downed SLC 3-0 in Brasher. LeGrow scored the game-winner 13 minutes into the game, and also scored the second insurance goal. Julia Blair also added a tally to the Massena side of the scoreboard. Lindsay Montroy worked the crease for eight saves.
The boys soccer team beat Salmon River and lost to Ogdensburg.
Their win over SRC came on Sept. 22 in Fort Covington. Logan Sharlow put Massena on the board late in the first half but Salmon’s Cameron Cartier tied it up five minutes later. Lleyton Ladue scored Massena’s second goal in the 21st minute of the second half, and followed up with an insurance goal with four minutes left in regulation. Casey Hooper denied 11 scoring attempts.
Two nights earlier, Massena lost to OFA 2-0.
