Kawehno:ke Residents To Receive First Nations Delivery Credit On Electricity Bill

(September 18, 2017) The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne is pleased to inform Kawehno:ke residents that the First Nations Delivery Credit is now being administered. Kawehno:ke residents may have noticed the new credit line on their August electricity bill, titled First Nations Delivery Credit. On May 31, 2017 the Province of Ontario passed the Fair Hydro Act that will eliminate the delivery charge and lower electricity bills by 25 per cent, on average, for all residential customers and provide the First Nations Delivery Credit. The First Nations Delivery Credit will provide First Nations on-reserve households with additional savings through a 100 percent credit of the delivery line on the monthly electricity bills.

First Nations on-reserve residential customers that are currently registered with their Local Distribution Company for the HST exemption will be automatically eligible and enrolled to receive the First Nations Delivery Credit. Those customers will see full credit on the August hydro bill.

First Nations on-reserve residential customers that are not currently registered with their Local Distribution Company to receive the HST exemption are encouraged to register as soon as possible. You will need to fill in the HST exemption form from your Hydro provider and send a copy of your valid status card. For customers who were unable to submit the HST exemption form prior to July, customers will be entitled to a reimbursement of the Delivery Charge back to July 1, 2017 as soon as you are able to submit your form.

The First Nations Delivery Credit was due largely in part to the successful lobbying efforts of the Chiefs of Ontario – Chiefs Committee on Energy.
