TSIIONKWANONHSO:TE RESIDENTS ARE "ON THE ROAD AGAIN"

Niawenko:wa to Island Auto for a generous donation

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne's Tsiionkwanonhso:te Long-Term Care Facility would like to extend thanks and appreciation to Island Auto, a Mohawk owned and operated auto repair business, for giving back to the long-term care community with a donation of the parts/labor costs to keep the para bus safe and roadworthy. This donation (in the amount of $2,888.50) included the costs for the annual Ministry of Transportation inspection. Being able to enjoy outings to go shopping, to sightsee and to enjoy the occasional ice cream cone can be a challenge arranging transportation for the residents living in the long-term care facility Tsiionkwanonhso:te.

Ernie Gambill, owner of Island Auto, was approached to repair the para bus and decided this was the perfect opportunity to 'give back to the community'. Ernie's grandmother, Marita, previously lived at Tsiionkwanonhso:te and after listening to the stories and challenges around resident outings, decided to help. Some individuals have the misconception that residents are not allowed to leave the facility once they are admitted! Ernie wants to keep the residents a part of the community they live in and have the opportunity to take part in neighborhood events.

"I am very happy to be able to do this for the residents and look forward to seeing them at the Powwow and other community events," stated Mr. Gambill. "I'm grateful for Teresa [Activity Director] giving us this opportunity by reaching out for help when the bus would not start."

"This donation from Ernie and the mechanics at Island Auto is such a generous gesture at this time, especially when the para bus is not included in the facility's budget and operating costs this year," stated Teresa David, Activity Director for Tsiionkwanonhso:te.

Island Auto is entering its third year of operations as an auto repair shop on Kawehno:ke (Cornwall Island). With 28 years of auto mechanic experience and ten years working at a Honda dealer, your auto is in good hands with Ernie. Nia:wenkowa once again for this act of kindness that will be enjoyed by many residents.
