Akwesasne man jailed on charges stemming from August shooting, stabbing

Massena village police have arrested a fourth suspect in connection with an August shooting and stabbing.

On Sept. 8, police charged Richard A. Herne, 36, of Akwesasne with first-degree assault, first-degree robbery and first-degree burglary.

He had turned himself in to the St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police, who turned him over to Massena police, according to Chief Adam Love.

He was arraigned in Massena Village Court by Justice Joseph Brown and remanded to the St. Lawrence County jail, Canton, in lieu of $150,000 bail or $300,000 bond, police said.

Herne and four alleged accomplices are accused of breaking into 10 Cook St. around 10:25 p.m. Aug. 3.

Police have also charged 23-year-old Damian A. Giarratano, 25-year-old Alan M. Green and 32-year-old Amanda M. Terrance, all of Massena, with robbery, burglary and assault in connection with the incident.

One of them was allegedly armed with a shotgun and shot Anthony A. Lewis, 31, in the chest. Another was armed with a machete and slashed Sergey Barsukov, 28, police said at the time.

Lewis was taken to Massena Memorial Hospital and flown to University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, Vt., where he was in serious condition. Barsukov was treated at MMH and released, police said at the time.

Love at the time declined to say which of the suspects is accused of the shooting and which is accused of the slashing.

Giarratano, Green and Terrance are all being held without bail.
