A Voice from the Eastern Door
The long awaited Akwesasne Coalition of Community Empowerment's Family Color Run finally took place on Wednesday, August 16th, 2017 at 5:00 pm. The Family Color Run was postponed back in July, during the 2017 Wellness Week due to bad weather. The event was originally supposed to take place at Generations Park on Friday July 14th, 2017 at 4:00 pm. The 2017 Wellness Week would have ended with the Family Color Run.
This is the second year the Family Color Run has taken place in Akwesasne. There were many programs involved in making this event a huge success. Everyone gathered at the Generations Park at 5:00 pm for registration and to go over some of the safety rules and safety precautions. One of the main concerns was for anyone with asthma or any lung condition, as the colored corn starch could irritate the lungs if inhaled. Once everyone was informed of the rules and safety precautions they headed over to the Tewatahita Walking Trail.
The Family Color Run was hosted by the Akwesasne Coalition for Community Empowerment, (ACCE) which consists of many programs from both Mohawk Council of Akwesasne and the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe along with a few not-for-profit organizations. The Walking Trail had groups of individuals from different programs set up along the trail, with plenty of colored powder to throw at everyone.
The event was definitely a success, with over a hundred people participating in the Family Color Run. The weather was perfect, which made the event much more enjoyable for everyone involved. There was a little obstacle course set up in the middle of the field for the little ones who did not want to be in the Run, or maybe just did not want to continue until the end. There was live entertainment for everyone to enjoy. There were different stations along the walking trail where bottles of water were handed out to ensure no one would become dehydrated. As well, the local ambulance service was on sight in case they were needed, luckily they were not needed.
