A Voice from the Eastern Door

SRMT Child Support Enforcement Unit Notice

The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Child Enforcement Unit is notifying tribal members who are custodial parents and currently have an order of support from any New York State Court that you are eligible to have your case transferred to the Tribe. Individuals can request a transfer for cases involving support for a child under the age of 21 that is payable through the New York State Child Support Processing Center.

Once your case is transferred, it will be registered with the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Court. If the custodial and non-custodial parent consent, the Tribal Court will then have exclusive jurisdiction over the matter. Tribal Court will also have the authority to modify any child support order if a modification has been requested and deemed allowable.

The benefits of transferring your case to the Tribe’s Child Support Enforcement Unit include being conveniently located in the community of Akwesasne, it takes a culturally sensitive and family centered approach to handling cases involving a tribally enrolled child, offers personalized service and support, is more flexible and allows for consideration of ‘non-cash’ support, and it exercises jurisdiction for the enforcement of support involving tribal entities and tribally licensed businesses.

If you are interested in transferring an order of support to the Tribe’s Child Support Enforcement Unit, you can download a Transfer Request Form from the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s website, at http://www.srmt-nsn.gov. You may also request a transfer from your NYS County Child Support caseworker or unit.

For more information, please call the Child Support Enforcement Unity at (518) 358-2272 extension 2410.
